31st July. St. Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius Loyola - IgnatianSpirituality.com

Ignatian spitituality has helped many people and become well known these days well beyond Catholicism. The fact that Ignatius grew up as a soldier and courtier with little attention to religion bar what was socially required and then discovered, discerned he would say, the power of knowing Jesus in your life, a power that overturned his life, his very attractive to many. I love meeting people who know his spirituality well, but am no expert myself. But I find his belief that we are given the power to say yes or no to what arrived in our lives very helpful. There is a very human temptation when faced with something destructive in our lives to simply give way to it as though there is no alternative. But Ignatius knew that we are given the ability to discern the right path and to say no when we need to. When something suddenly comes into our minds we can just surrender to it, but we can say, I do not accept that, and refuse it. We have the ability to take control, though we can do things, take things, to weaken that control, and what gives us the strength to choose what is right is Jesus.
