A moment ago Jesus seemed unable to do more than try to struggle to his feet. But when he meets the women of Jerusalem his natural compassion empowers him to speak to them. He knows that the future for them and their children is not good. War and dispersal of its citizens awaits those living in the city. So he cannot but speak gently to them even in his own suffering. This is one of the most moving of the stations of the cross. Throughout the world mothers, often at the expense of their own lives, are fighting for the lives of their children. Often in parts of the world the family faces death, sometimes a mother shares in and suffers the emotional, psychological battles within their children. Jesus is always present, he knows the suffering, and we can always turn to him for help.
